11 JUNE 2013 OPERATION PLANS RESUME
Overt Surveillance sketch out plans for the resumption of services and greater public participation.
*BETWEEN SEPTEMBER 2011 UNTIL JUNE 2013 OPERATIONS CEASED PENDING AN INVESTIGATION*
4 AUGUST 2011: NEWS INTERNATIONAL
News International have been in the news themselves a lot recently, accused of illegal “listening”. Overt Surveillance decided to carry out a mission of “looking” at News International Offices in Wapping. Despite the rain, the mission was a success.

“Oh! You are artists!”
Security a little relieved when we “overtly” announced our un-secret mission was complete
4 AUGUST 2011: WESTMINSTER PALACE
Politicans have themselves been implicated in the naughty newspaper listening antics. We had a good look at where they work. We decided on an eyes only surveillance – and took no notes or sketches. We retain the memory in our minds. Then we spotted a whole camp of people who spent every day overtly watching the House of Commons.
4 AUGUST 2011: SCOTLAND YARD
Overt Surveillance ended the day by watching Scotland Yard. Notes and sketches will be uploaded shortly.
THIS IS THE FLYER THAT WE HANDED OUT:
4 AUGUST UN-SECRET MISSION
Today Overt Surveillance are looking at the offices of News International at 1 Virginia Street, London, E98 1XY. The second mission today will involve “seeing” Westminster Palace in London and a third mission will be to watch Scotland Yard. As with other missions, surveillance will involve looking, sketching and taking random notes in pencil – but are otherwise unrecorded in any format. You are, however, very welcome to take photographs of the operatives – and even join in with a bit of looking yourself.
Overt Surveillance was started in the summer of 2011 by two British artists, Janice Wilkins and Caroline Jaine, who combine an interest in civil liberties and new technologies with the old art-school instruction to “do more looking”. They thought it best to get out of their studios into the “real” world and conduct some very un-secretive observations. The aim of Overt Surveillance is to celebrate the art of neutral watching.
They are more Little Sister, than Big Brother
In August 2011 Overt Surveillance will be revealing fund-raising plans which involve a huge drive for members of the public to invest in the “art of watching” – helping to bring neutral observation into the schools, festivals and galleries of Britain.

9 JULY 2011: EDL DEMONSTRATION CAMBRIDGE
Overt Surveillance held their inaugural operation in Cambridge. They watched a demonstration by the English Defence League and a counter-demonstration by the Trade Union Council/Unite Against Fascism, but were most interested in looking at the police and the media.
